My Story
I entered the financial services industry back in 2015 as a junior broker for an insurance company. During my time there, my supervisor requested that I write the RE5 exam. This was a rather overwhelming thought as I had no clue what the RE5 exam was about or what it meant for me. I Googled RE5, but there was very little information about the exam at the time. My supervisor then advised that all I needed to do was download the Acts and study them like mad, which is what I did. It was an exhausting and tiring experience given all the jargon and legal terminology displayed in the Acts. I had to read the Acts multiple times to grasp the concepts. I created my own summaries and question banks to help me retain all the information. I studied for almost two months and eventually managed to pass.

While engaging with colleagues and friends, it became clear that most people who wrote the RE5 exam failed on their first attempt. That sparked an idea in my head: What if I could build on my study notes to create a simple study pack to help others pass the exam on their first attempt, like I did? I had the idea but did not act on it, thinking people might not be interested.

I later joined South Africa’s largest pension fund administrator as a junior financial planner, where I serviced an array of different clients in Cape Town. Not long after, I got a promotion to a team leader position and was asked to write the RE1 exam. I used my RE5 notes and added the additional sections for RE1. Again, after much studying and many long nights, I managed to pass on my first attempt. The study pack idea returned to me, and I thought it might be worth exploring. I did further research and found that there was a huge need for RE5 resources online. This was when I decided to refine my study notes and other resources to create the RE5 Study Pack. This was how RE Exam Buddy was born.
